Vegas Pro 21 renders a bit darker from the original footage

  • Hello everyone!

So below you will see the original footage and the one rendered out of Vegas with no changes done to it. I have already done my fair bit of research and ran upon this thread

but my issue is not with the preview, but with Vegas straight-up darkening the video after I render. I exported the same video from After Effects and there was no darkening problem. So I assume the issue is Vegas-related. I tried different codecs too and the issue still remained in Vegas.

    Hat das Thema freigeschaltet.
  • How are you judging the rendered footage (what player?)

Which project settings are you using? 8-bit full, 8-bit video or a 32-bit mode? Try 8-bit full if you want to judge your footage by eye or if you have a mix of video and full range footage.

Can you do a h264 render in Voukoder and also with MagixAVC through VEGAS. Do the levels match?

    Hi,

I use VLC to watch the footage. The project settings are 8-bit (full range).

After doing an h264 AMF render the colors are the same as the original footage no darkening at all! This is interesting because I always do a HEVC AMF. I even tried ProRes and the colors did not match. What am I doing wrong exactly? it doesn't work correctly HEVC/others, but it works just fine with h264. I'll provide the original video data for reference

  • I don't understand AMF- what does that mean?

Do you get the same result using the Magix presets (MagixHEVC or MagixAVC) as their Voukoder counterparts?

Does MagixAVC with VCE match Voukoder h264 with VCE?
Does MagixHEVC with VCE match Voukoder h265 with VCE?

Do the Voukoder renders match each other?

  • Glad you figured it out!

Personally I gave up on VLC for gamma issues like that and switched to MPC Black Edition with LAV filters and it works predictably. It also has MediaInfo integrated into it (file/properties).

  • Glad you got that sorted. This issue bothered me for years, (as seen in where you quoted my past post)... All was finally solved when Vegas implemented the " 8-bit (Full Range)" option in the Project Settings.

Don't use VLC anymore either, Currently using Pot Player.

  • I think the issue with Vegas previewing goes beyond Voukoder. Preview since vp18 is for a full-range display, best matching projects set to full-range. Renders are generally video-range. To view video-range renders to match the Vegas preview, they have to be converted back to full-range by the viewer. I do this with MPC-HC by adding the 16-235 to 0-255 preset to its Active pre-size shaders list. YouTube auto-converts uploads to full-range. So YouTube also matches the Vegas preview.

Another possibility is to render full-range. Those will match the Vegas preview without a view transform. But if you upload those renders to YouTube, it will auto-convert them even though they're already full-range. And it won't look good.
