Voukoder and Vegas Pro 18 - Crash whenever a ProRes Source File recorded in OBS is used

  • Hello

I am currently playing around with ProRes and found a problem with ProRes sources files, Voukoder and Vegas Pro.

I used Voukoder and Vegas Pro 18 for the last weeks with other codecs (in the source files) and exported my clips using Voukoder to ProRes, H264 etc. without problems.

I just recorded my first ProRes files with OBS (MOV Container, tried all three available Codec: prores, prores_ks, prores_aw) and each of them makes Vegas Pro crash when I want to export the clip using voukoder. The crash occurs indepedent of the export codec (ProRes, H264 (Software), H264 (NVENC) or container picked (MOV, MP4). The problem occurs only with ProRes Source files that I record in OBS.

I can open and export the ProRes Files, which I recorded in OBS, in Adobe Premiere. I exported the ProRes Files to new MOV/ProRes Files in Adobe Premiere and these files I can export in Vegas Pro using Voukoder.

In any case I can open the ProRes Files, recorded in OBS, in Vegas Pro and edit them. I also can export them using any Vegas Pro internal Codec and Container such as the Magix Intermediate which is a rebranded ProRes Codec. The only problem is with exporting ProRes Files recorded in OBS in Vegas Pro using Voukoder. Any ideas?

I did not install the Voukoder connector for Adobe Premiere, yet. Gonna try that in a minute. All Software is licenced and has the latest updates.

  • Sometimes I have this problem in Vegas Pro 14 with Bandicam files. When this occurs enough go to in the project properties and redefine the frame rate, even if it is for the frame rate that is already defined in the project.

For example: If you record your video of the OBS at 29,970 fps, when you add this video to the Vegas Pro timeline, the project will normally assume the properties of the video and you can edit it normally. But if you're going to use Voukoder to render the video, you'll need to go to the project's properties first and reset the frame rate to 29,970. The reason for that I can't explain, but it works here. Maybe this will work for you too.

I think vegas recognizes the Bandicam and OBS files as being a variable frame rate (VFR) and that is why the error occurs when rendering, which is always a constant frame rate. Perhaps that is why changing the frame rate on project properties solves this problem. Doing this Vegas interprets the project as constant frame rate (CFR).

  • Ran into this problem with h.264 MP4 files recorded and remuxed in OBS (using current version 30.2.3). Vegas 20 will crash when trying to render the project through Voukoder or VoukoderPro. Even opening a single OBS-generated h.264 MP4 file and trying to render it causes the Vegas 20 crash. No helpful log files from Voukoder or VoukoderPro, seems like it is Vegas itself that is crashing. Crash does not occur when using non-Voukoder encoders in Vegas (e.g., Sony AVC/MVC). Crash also does not occur with h.265 MP4 files from OBS.

Tried turning on/off the Legacy AVC/HEVC decoding and MKV Reader in Vegas 20 (Options -> Preferences -> File I/O). None of these settings made a difference.

Searched the forums, and found this thread.

The solution, as noted by Joelson_Forte above, was to reassert the framerate in Vegas Project Properties (File -> Properties), even though it appeared to be set correctly to 23.976. I pulled down the Frame Rate menu, and selected the same 23.976 option that was already selected. Hit OK, and now the project will render.

    Voukoder v13.4.1, connector v1.7.1, VoukoderPro v1.3.0
